課程概述

New media technologies such as the Internet, smartphone communication, social media, and virtual reality not only have created new lifestyles but also have brought about remarkable transformations in our bodily, cognitive, and emotional experiences. More importantly, they urge us to rethink what it means to be "human" in that, today, a prominent part of our thinking and feeling capability seems to be prompted—if not significantly operated—by digital technologies. This course will examine the abovementioned transformations as well as the social, cultural, and politico-economic impacts of new media. We will address these questions theoretically and, at the same time, debate issues based on empirical research.

課程目標
The course seeks to familiarize students with something that is shaping the world today. The course will also put great emphasis on honing students’ independent thinking abilities, challenging them to reconsider what they may have taken for granted and pushing them to formulate sound viewpoints on the complexities of new media. A side goal of the course is for students to entertain the prospect of using the knowledge gained in this class in their future career development.
課程要求
1. Regular attendance. Unexcused absence from four classes will result in a failing grade. Habitual lateness will also affect your final grade adversely.

2. Preparation & class participation. Prior preparation of required reading and active participation in class will be relentlessly required.

3. Midterm exam. In-class closed-book written exam.

4. "Spotlight Media" research project. This consists of an oral presentation and a write-up: Team up with one classmate or two, and, together with your group members, conduct research and prepare an oral presentation of 20 minutes on the "spotlight media" of your choice. For each selected medium, collect hard facts (e.g., its origin, development, current status, influence, etc.) and evaluate its strengths, possible drawbacks or limitations, and the challenges it may be facing at present. A write-up of the presentation is required: each person on the team is responsible for at least 400 words; specify each person’s contribution to the report. Document your sources in the write-up.

5. Creative project. In lieu of a final exam, you are to conduct a creative project: Write a proposal to a prospective funding source (an actually existing one) in which you present an idea for an app that you believe is brilliant. It can be for profit or for charitable purposes. Your proposal may ignore the technical aspects of the production process, but must include the following:

(a) market share analysis: whether or not there are similar products on the market—and if yes, the reasons why yours may stand out;
(b) target users and your pricing strategy;
(c) main functions and features of the app; and
(d) strengths of the product and the impacts it may bring.
